Whalesharks the Lifeblood of La Paz Tourism

Whale sharks have become big business in La Paz Mexico. Last year in 2014 Sea Watch saw that many of the Whale sharks (2/3 by the end of the season in June) had been damaged by propellers. After photgraphing the damage we worked with Televisa’s Armando Figaredo to publicize this problem and get officials to offer some protection. See video below. Action was promised and this year in the fall of 2015 after checking with Dra. Deni Ramírez, biólogist and directora of  http://www.whalesharkmexico.com to see what had been done, it appears that Profepa is stopping unlicensed private boats from getting close to juvenile feeding whale sharks at at the same time they have reduced the number of licenses for commercial boats.  The OC patrol boat is now helping Deni with vigilance in that area and with her research. Seawatch was an original founder of OC and still supports it and helps Deni each year with funding also.

To see and learn about whalesharks in La Paz,  go to Deni’s website http://www.whalesharkmexico.com/  and book a trip with her aboard.
