For the past five years the focus of the SeaWatch partner Amigos del Mar de
Cortez has been on gaining the approval of the Mexican government for a pilot
marine wildlife management program modeled after the Departments of Game and
Fish in the western united states.
President Fox and the Secretary of Agriculture and Baja Californaia Sur Governor
Leonel Cota have jointly approved the establishment of a commission to provide
oversight for such a pilot project in the state of Baja California Sur.
La Comission Nautico-Recreativa y de Pesca Deportiva (The Commission of Nautical
Recreation and Sport Fishing) has been granted broad authority to coordinate,
develop and oversee marine management programs, establish new funding mechanisms
and call for the cooperation of scientific and research institutions in developing
sustainable management plans for Mexico's waterways.
Sr. Guillermo Alvarez has been named the Executive Director of the new Commission
and he has recognized the role of the Amigos del Mar de Cortez in its establishment
by designating a seat on the Commission for the Amigos del Mar de Cortez.
Now more than ever, the Amigos del Mar de Cortez needs your financial support
to be able to participate in this exciting and most important pilot project. Visit
their web site now.
